Skin
cancer is a ubiquitous problem in today's times of significant
outdoor activity coupled with lessening of the protective
ozone layer and an increasingly aging population. The
Sachs Institute of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, New York City,
in conjunction with the Pathology Department of the Prestigious
New York Eye and Ear Infirmary under the Direction of
Dr. Stephen McCormick uses state of the art diagnostic,
pathologic and surgical facilities to diagnose and then
appropriately treat any type of skin cancer. Skin cancers
can be categorized into 3 specific types:

The
most benign call basal cell skin cancer does not spread
but must be removed because it can grow and proliferate,
locally destroying adjacent tissues.

This is the next most
serious type of skin cancer, because not only does it
destroy tissues locally but it can actually spread throughout
the body, thus it must be detected and treated early,
for the best possible results.

This is the third,
and most dangerous type of skin cancer because not only
can it spread, but once it has spread it is generally
lethal. Thus it must be diagnosed extremely early so that
it can be essentially cured in the beginning stages of
the disease.

Any
patient, who sits in the sun, has a significant family
history of skin cancer, or who is greater than 50 years
of age should have yearly check-up for evaluating their
skin for skin cancer. Most freckles, moles, dark spots
and lesions on the skin are benign. To determine their
diagnosis Dr. Sachs uses a state of the art diagnostic
pathology laboratory to examine the skin tissue once he
had taken a biopsy. If the biopsy is diagnosed as a skin
cancer than most of the time nothing else has to be done.
Dr. Sachs will discuss each patient's individual concerns
during a private consultation.
